A new study suggests that the birth control pill (the drug used to treat endometriosis) may not be enough to prevent certain types of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in women, says Dr. Robert E. Johnson, an obstetrics and gynecology professor at Northwestern University and a member of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Johnson said this is because the treatment is often not well-tolerated by pregnant women. In addition, the new study is the first to document how the contraceptive pills protect women’s reproductive organs.
A recent study from the University of Michigan examined the efficacy of Depo-Provera, a medication designed to prevent pregnancy, in preventing sexually transmitted infections. The study, published in the March 20 issue of the journal Science Translational Medicine, found that the pills did not appear to prevent sexually transmitted infections. The study, however, found that women who had used Depo-Provera had significantly fewer STIs compared to women who had not used the pills.
In addition, the new study was conducted by researchers from the University of Rochester who were involved in research on the contraceptive pill, known as the Depo-Provera contraceptive, and is studying the impact of Depo-Provera on women’s fertility.
The researchers analyzed data from 11,000 women who had been diagnosed with STIs in the United States in the year 2012. The researchers collected data on women who used Depo-Provera and other hormonal contraceptive methods. They found that the contraceptive pill, which has been prescribed since at least 1992, was more effective in preventing pregnancy than the oral contraceptive pill, which has been used since at least 1973.
“These findings suggest that there may be an increased risk of STIs among women using the birth control pill, particularly those who are not using it regularly or use contraception for longer than one year,” Johnson said.
Depo-Provera is a prescription contraceptive that has been available since 1992 and is considered the first birth control pill. The pill was the first hormonal birth control pill ever approved by the FDA and is now one of the most widely used. It contains the hormone progestin, which helps control menstrual flow and improve the quality of the uterine lining, while reducing the risk of miscarriage and other birth defects.
The contraceptive pill is often prescribed in conjunction with other health care providers. A few studies have examined the efficacy of Depo-Provera in preventing pregnancy in women using this type of contraceptive method. Researchers studied how the drug works in a group of women who were randomly assigned to receive two kinds of hormonal contraception: one of the pills containing medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), and the other containing drospirenone, a synthetic progestin that is the hormone responsible for thickening the uterine lining. Researchers used data from women who took the MPA pill for five years and followed the women for five years to measure how they responded to the contraceptive.
“Our findings suggest that women who were using the contraceptive pill may have higher levels of cervical mucus, which is the normal structure of the cervix,” Johnson said.
The study also found that women who used Depo-Provera had fewer STIs than women who had not used the pill.
While the new study is important because the drugs may be used to prevent STIs in women, Dr. Johnson also noted that the use of these drugs, along with other forms of birth control, may contribute to a greater risk of STIs in women.
“If we had been able to determine that there were no STIs in women using the contraceptives, that would have been the result of better outcomes for women who were using the contraceptive pill,” Dr. Johnson said.
Johnson said that the findings will be of interest to researchers interested in studying the contraceptive pill.
